It is with great sadness we announce the death today of General Colin L. Powell. In his storied career he served in many theaters of war from Vietnam to Iraq. He continued his service as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, he was one of the only National Security advisors to serve in uniform and the first Black person to lead the State Department as George W. Bush’s Secretary of State. He was the recipient of 2 Presidential Medals of Freedom for his unparalleled service to our nation and the world.
General Powell’s family migrated to New York from Jamaica and he was born in Harlem but grew up in the Bronx where he graduated from Morris High School. He said he is indebted to the people of New York for his free high school education and then attended the City College of New York. No, he never went to West Point but came through the ranks through ROTC. When he graduated from college he was given the rank of 2nd Lieutenant which led to his legendary military career.
After retiring from public service, General Powell lectured and wanted to help at-risk children which he did through founding and then chairing the non-profit organization America’s Promise.
He is survived by his wife Alma and their 3 children. Even through his foibles and missteps we will long remember the honored service this patriotic American gave to our country.
